The Cape Charles Food Pantry really needs donations. The Cape Charles Memorial Library will be holding a 6 week Writing Workshop led by published author Margaret Richard, beginning on Wednesday, February 4 and continuing through Wednesday, March 11. The Workshop will be held at the Cape Charles Memorial Library at 500 Tazewell Avenue in Cape Charles. This course will help you learn how to write or to improve your current writing and will also give you a chance to share your writing with others. The course is free and open to the general public. The tours cover from 3 to 4 miles and the walking surface varies from soft to hard-packed sand with one short stretch of concrete roadway. There are no restrooms. Participants meet at the Visitor Center at Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge at 8:45 a.m., and carpool to Fisherman Island. Advance registration is required. You might see bald eagles, hawks, pelicans, warblers, and waterfowl. As you pass through several distinct habitats, you will learn about wildlife management on the refuge, explore the diversity of animals and plants and discover the rich history of Fisherman Island. The tours cover from 3 to 4 miles and the walking surface varies from soft to hard-packed sand with one short stretch of concrete roadway. There are no restrooms. 10 a.m. - "Virtual Broadwater" Open Discussion Group Meeting: at the Barrier Islands Center. Come learn more about this community-based project to document the homes that were moved from the village of Broadwater on Hog Island to the seaside mainland of the Eastern Shore. The project involves historical research, documentation of findings, computer modeling of the existing houses, and presentation of the models in Google Earth. Everyone is encouraged to participate, and no computer experience is necessary. All you need is a love for the Eastern Shore and a desire to preserve a piece of our history forever.

5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. - Second Annual Blessing of the Fleet at the Cape Charles Harbor. The Blessing of the Fleet is a traditional "Thanks to the Almighty" for a safe season and good harvest for our local Watermen. The "blessing" will take place at 5;30 p.m. in our Harbor, followed by a party with fresh seafood, drinks, and music. Help us welcome our Watermen back home to Cape Charles this season!

8 a.m. First Annual Blessing of the Fleet 5K Walk / Run with registration starting at 8 a.m. and the walk / run starting at 9 a.m. The route starts at Impact Fitness (Peach St.) takes you down to the Chesapeake Bay and along the Cape Charles beachfront. As you turn away from the beach you will run along Washington Ave turning left onto Fig. This will take you into Bay Creek's Marina. After running around the perimeter of the Marina, you turn left into Marina Village East along Bahama Drive. At the end of Bahama you will turn right onto Randolph Avenue finishing the run at Impact Fitness on Peach St.

10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. - Children's Boating Safety Class. Calling all kids who love to go boating! The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 12-02 out of Painter is offering a children's boat safety class to be held at the Barrier Islands Center. The class is designed for every child 7-14 yrs. who loves to go boating and for every mom and dad who want their kids to know boat safety at an early age. In this hands-on class, students will learn introductory boating safety skills to help lay the groundwork for years of boating fun! Cost: FREE. Reservations required. Reservations and payment are due today for Children's Carving Class with P.G Ross on Saturday and Sunday, May 2 - 3 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. both days at the Barrier Islands Center for ages 7 thru 14 years.
