Roberta earned Bachelor and Master of Music Education degrees from the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, Illinois, where she majored in piano and composition. Roberta was Chair of the Music Department at the Laboratory Schools of the University of Chicago and taught elementary, intermediate, and high school music classes. While at the Laboratory Schools, Roberta developed Experiencing Music, a series of music appreciation texts featuring diverse music from the local community and around the world. Her recent publication, Connect with Music, is widely used as a music resource in after-school programs across the nation.

9 a.m. to 12 p.m. - Scheduled Tours of Fisherman Island are offered for free and introduce visitors to the unique variety of wildlife found on the Island. As you pass through several distinct habitats you will learn about wildlife management on the refuge, explore the diversity of animals and plants and discover the rich history of Fisherman Island. The tours cover from 3 to 4 miles and the walking surface varies from soft to hard-packed sand with one short stretch of concrete roadway. There are no restrooms.

6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. - Dinner Excursion on the Bay Creek Railway. Now, you can enjoy comfortable, authentic rail travel as it was in the 1910’s on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Enjoy a four course meal during the approximately 2 hour trip and travel north from Cape Charles through the rural Eastern Shore. 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. - Northampton Memorial Library hosts The Virginiad :400 Years of Virginia History in Poetry by Tim Lewis, a Reading and Book Signing. Tim Lewis was born in England but he has been a resident of Virginia for many years and is the author of 8 books, including history, poetry and fiction. He has performed his poetry to audiences across America and Europe and his works of history have won international acclaim. In his book, the Virginiad , Lewis explores Virginia from 1607 to the present day in poetry as seen through the eyes of ordinary folk. The poetry mixes songs, cultural customs, religious awakenings, social beliefs, and political movements to present a unique history of Virginia.

6 p.m. - The second Parade and Scavenger Hunt Organizing Meeting will be held at the Cape Charles Post Office in the upstairs conference room. All people interested in helping with this event are invited to join us.

6 p.m. – First Wednesday Brings in the Holiday Season at The Chesapeake’s open mike night for musicians and poets. A buffet is available for $8 (free if you perform that evening). Please join them as they begin the holiday season with goodwill and merriment and some seasonal songs, stories and poems! Grand Prize is a 12 drawer rolling Craftsman tool chest loaded with Craftsman hand tools. A ticket gets you into the event where there is free food: Homemade Barbecue, Hamburgers, Hot dogs, Potato Salad, and Cole Slaw. Beverages are also included in the admission. State Folklorist Jon Lohman will lead the audience on an audio-visual tour of some of the diverse ways in which communities of the Commonwealth are expressing themselves through music. Free.

Doodlers (5 to 11 yrs. old) from 4:05 p.m. to 5 p.m. for a cost of $75 per child. In this session, we’ll explore some highlights of the season with projects focusing on wintry delights. We’ll use a wide range of art media as we build snowmen in the meadow, play in icicle-covered forests, meet an atmospheric scientist/photographer and much more during this very cool art session.
