Roberta Newman of Cape Charles will offer piano lessons for ages 6 through adult beginning in September. Lessons are $20 per ½ hour session. Roberta earned Bachelor and Master of Music Education degrees from the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, Illinois, where she majored in piano and composition. At the Laboratory Schools of the University of Chicago, Roberta was Chair of the Music Department and taught elementary, intermediate, and high school music classes. As you pass through several habitats, you will learn about wildlife managements on refuges, explore the diversity of wildlife and discover the rich history of Fisherman Island and the role it played during World War II. Trail length is 4 miles. The walking surface varies from soft to hard-packed sand with one short stretch of concrete roadway. Advanced registration is required. Food served from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Beer and wine will be available, also a Silent Auction and a 50/50 raffle. 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. - Northampton Memorial Library hosts The Virginiad :400 Years of Virginia History in Poetry by Tim Lewis, a Reading and Book Signing. Tim Lewis was born in England but he has been a resident of Virginia for many years and is the author of 8 books, including history, poetry and fiction. He has performed his poetry to audiences across America and Europe and his works of history have won international acclaim. In his book, the Virginiad , Lewis explores Virginia from 1607 to the present day in poetry as seen through the eyes of ordinary folk. The poetry mixes songs, cultural customs, religious awakenings, social beliefs, and political movements to present a unique history of Virginia.

1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. - 4th Annual How Did Santa Claus Get Down a Twisted Chimney? Children’s Christmas Program with Abrakadoodle (ages 5-12). What a fun way to ring in the holidays! Kids, join us for festive Christmas art projects and enjoy stories and songs from Christmas’s past. The children will see an actual twisted chimney that is located in the historic almshouse attic. Holiday refreshments will be served. (Courtesy of Abrakadoodle, all proceeds from this event will go directly back to the Barrier Islands Center!) Cost: $20. 3 p.m. – Arts Enter Cape Charles will present Eternal Thrill of Christmas, an inspiring performance involving actors, dancers, singer and musicians to help celebrate this special time of year – Christmas! Held at the Historic Palace Theatre, this three part show will delight families, friends, and theatre patrons with its rich variety of the performing arts displaying artistic diversity in a wonderful holiday presentation. 10:30 a.m. – It’s Toddler & Preschool Storytime at Northampton Memorial Library in Cape Charles. Storytime introduces children to the library and to the wonderful world of books with a fast paced program that includes stories, songs, and finger plays. The theme for this week is It’s Snowing.
Thursday, December 11
7:30 p.m. – Arts Enter presents “Christmas with Elvis – Memories of Memphis” at the Historic Palace Theatre in Cape Charles. Jim Smith, the ultimate Elvis Tribute winner from Virginia Beach will perform with his 5 piece band. Mini-film montage of Elvis before Elvis appears. Christmas cookies, hot chocolate and cash bar available. Tickets: $15 per adult, $8 per student.

Drawing for a Red Drum Wood Carving by renowned carver John Harlow – tickets are $1 each, 6 tickets for $5, or 13 tickets for $10. The proceeds support American Legion Post 56 charitable activities. Tickets can be purchased at the American Legion Post 56 in Cheriton and at Sullivan’s Office Supply in Cape Charles.

7:30 p.m. – Arts Enter Cape Charles will present the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. Come and celebrate the Christmas Season a selection of your favorite brass standards performed by the Virginia Symphony brass and percussion – spotlight the harp! Founded in 1920, the Virginia Symphony has served the communities of Hampton Roads for eight decades and has grown into a fully professional ensemble recognized as one of the nation’s leading regional symphony orchestras. 6 p.m. - Annual Epiphany Party, held at the Cape Charles Volunteer Fire House, is an event which raises money for local individual(s) or organizations in need of funds. All who attend are requested to bring your "least favorite" Christmas gift. All gifts will be auctioned off to raise funds. All of the funds raised at this event stay local and the Chili at this event is becoming "legend" on the Eastern Shore. 5:30 p.m. - BIC Speaker Series: Virginia State Folklorist Jon Lohman: “Traditional Music Styles of Virginia.” There are a dizzying number of styles of traditional music in Virginia, ranging from the sea shanties of the Chesapeake watermen to the old time and bluegrass stylings of the Blue Ridge. State Folklorist Jon Lohman will lead the audience on an audio-visual tour of some of the diverse ways in which communities of the Commonwealth are expressing themselves through music. Free.

Children’s Abrakadoodle Art Class: A Winter Wonderland: a 6 week session on Wednesdays. Mini Doodlers (3 to 5 yrs) from 3:15 p.m. to 4:05 p.m. for a cost of $70 per child. Doodlers (5 to 11 yrs. old) from 4:05 p.m. to 5 p.m. for a cost of $75 per child. In this session, we’ll explore some highlights of the season with projects focusing on wintry delights. We’ll use a wide range of art media as we build snowmen in the meadow, play in icicle-covered forests, meet an atmospheric scientist/photographer and much more during this very cool art session. Come on in, pull off your mittens and boots, grab a cup of hot cocoa, and join us in creating art that will bring some warmth to this season.

8 p.m. – Arts Enter Cape Charles will present Sgt. Pepper: A Tribute to the Beatles. You won’t believe your eyes… or your ears! The band captures all the thrills Beatles fans have missed for 40 years with identical costumes and equipment. The look and sound is uncanny. Fun for all ages as you sing along to your favorite Beatle song, the music will shine on forever! Songs include “Strawberry Fields Forever”, “Penny Lane” and “I Want to Hold Your Hand” to “I’m Down” played with Vox amps and Rickenbacker guitars made famous by the Beatles. 5:30 p.m. - BIC Speaker Series: Art Schwartzchild, Director of University of Virginia LTER presents “Climate Change and Sea Level Rise on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.” Art Schwartzchild will discuss what his research site is doing in monitoring sea levels, historic trends and what this means for the Barrier Islands and the Eastern Shore. 5:30 p.m. - Rick and Janice Felker of Mattawoman Creek Farms will discuss organic gardening and the process and benefits to community supported agriculture, as well as give us a peek as to what is growing down at the farm this upcoming season. Free at the Barrier Island Center.

9 a.m. to 1 p.m. - Floorcloth Making Workshop with Miriam Riggs, cost is $85 and includes materials. This popular class is back! Participants will design and create their own floorcloth to take home. Have some fun while adding that personal touch to your house to be enjoyed for years to come. Contact the Barrier Island Center for more information.

Children’s Boating Safety Class with the U.S. Coast Guard. Calling all kids who love to be on the water in a boat! This introductory boat safety class is for every child from 7 to 14 who loves to go boating and for every mom and dad who want their kids to know boat and water safety at an early age. In this hands-on 3 hour class, students will learn introductory boating safety skills to help lay the groundwork for years of boating fun!
