Barrier island upland communities consist of a complex and delicate balance of unique grasslands, dense shrub thickets and rare maritime forest. While these communities are well adapted to the harsh physical environment typical of coastal systems, they are also highly susceptible to global change. My research has focused on the expansion of wax myrtle and how dense thickets of this ecologically important shrub have altered upland habitat and helped shape the barrier island environment.
